Turun ITF Taekwon-Do club
This page introduces the club and gives a brief overview of its history. In 2026, Turun ITF Taekwon-Do will celebrate its tenth anniversary.
Club's history
Active ITF Taekwon-Do activity began in Turku in 2016, when Niina Ahvenjärvi, Enni Mannila, and Eisa Hermanoff, who had met at the Tampere Taekwon-Do club and moved to Turku for their studies, started training together. Soon, they heard about an instructor who had also moved to Turku and was willing to continue training. Janne Vuononvirta (then 4. Dan, now 5. Dan) began teaching the three enthusiastic color belt students, who soon started instructing training sessions themselves. The club was officially founded in December 2016 and was accepted as a member of the federation at the spring meeting in 2017. Before long, the small but active club was in full swing, and its first camp took place in May 2018, focused on self-defense and led by Master Mikko Allinniemi.
Over ten years, members, facilities, and belt ranks have changed, but the club’s activity continues strongly. Training has moved from schools to tatamis, new enthusiastic members have joined, and some of the original members, who were at the start of their Taekwon-Do journey, are now teaching new practitioners.
Club's head teacher
Sabum Janne Vuononvirta, 5. Dan, started Taekwon-Do in Ii in 1999. Thanks to his dedicated training, Janne earned his first Dan black belt quickly, already in the spring of 2003. He has been teaching Taekwon-Do regularly since the age of 17 in Northern Finland, primarily in Oulu and Rovaniemi. He achieved the 5th Dan Teacher rank in 2022.
After moving to Turku in August 2016, he helped start a training group, and when Turku ITF Taekwon-Do was founded, he was chosen as the head instructor of the new club. Professionally, Janne works as a specialist in psychiatry and as a cognitive psychotherapist.
